About The Business & WebsiteWelcome to my gardening website, The Garden Website.com. My name is Amanda Jarrett, and I admit to being a ‘plant nut’. I developed this website to inform all gardeners, whether they are new to gardening, avid gardeners or professional landscapers, the tried and true methods of gardening efficiently and effectively.
As a professional horticulturist with a Red Seal certification in horticulture, and being in the business for over 30 years, I have learned a few things along the way. As a horticulture consultant, helping people become informed seemed a prudent thing to do especially after seeing the same mistakes repeated over and over again. I have spent many years educating landscapers and home owners in horticulture at Langara College, Douglas College and Gaia College in British Columbia. The teaching was actually a sideline at first because my main focus was my garden consulting business in North Delta, B.C. Canada, aptly named Amanda’s Garden Consulting Company. When I visit a client, their garden becomes their classroom and the website helps to augment my recommendations as it explains how and why things are done. I really enjoy visiting people’s gardens to help them with their garden issues, whether it is troubleshooting plant problems, showing them how to prune, how to grow food, how to lower maintenance, lawn maintenance, redesigning their garden or whatever they need to make their garden work for them. This website is also a way to make use of my addiction to photographing plants and nature. I am very fond of pretty plant pictures so there’s lots of them, especially on the home page, which changes every month. The home page details what garden chores need to be done and features the flowers and plants of note for that month. So I hope that my website is of use to you, even if you just browse and look at the pictures. There’s lots more to come so keep on checking in and I’ll do my best to keep the information coming. If you need personal assistance please fill out the form below. I service the Metro Vancouver area in British Columbia. I look forward to helping you make your garden the place you want to be. |
ABout AmandaOriginally I was born in England, but have moved about quite a bit. I learned about horticulture when I went to St. Clair College in Windsor Ontario. Further studies, all horticultural related, include University of Guelph, University of Florida with my last stint at Gaia College to become an Organic Certified Land Care Professional.
I first started my garden consulting company in Fort McMurray, Alberta. I even had a call in radio show and weekly garden column in the local paper. When I moved to Florida, I had to become re-educated in tropical growing hence my time at the University of Florida. I spent 10 years in Cape Coral, Florida and was the Horticulture Chair for the Edison Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers. I have learned how to garden from the far north of Zone 3 in Fort McMurray, to the subtropics of Zone 10 in Florida and finally in the temperate Zone 8 in Vancouver. I have killed a few plants along the way, but in doing so, I have learned from my mistakes. From the humble beginnings of writing for the local newspaper in Fort McMurray I graduated to becoming a freelance writer for newspapers and magazines in Canada and America. Finally I put pen to paper to author my own book, including doing the photos for the very popular book, Ornamental Tropical Shrubs, published in 2003 by Pineapple Press, available at amazon.ca and amazon.com. With a Professional Instructor Diploma, I also took on coordinating and writing courses for Kwantlen Polytech University (Floriculture and Botany) and the Horticulture Apprenticeship (Botany and Plant Identification). I have been the instructor and coordinator for numerous courses including the Residential Landscape Technician Diploma program and the Organic Master Gardener. I really wish I had the time to continue to teach, run the business and deal with the website, but there’s just not enough hours in the day. Now my classroom are the gardens of my clients. As a horticultural consultant, my role is to provide information and personal instruction for those that want a more pleasurable garden experience instead of toiling away. My goal is to convert gardens into functional low maintenance sustainable ecosystems. When combined with practical designs that fit the lifestyle and desires of my clients, the end results are happy gardens, happy plants and happy clients! Cheers and happy gardening, Amanda |
